Gettysburg College alumni, parents, and friends have always been generous, offering their time and connections to move other Gettysburgians along in their careers. In today's extremely challenging job market, your support is not only necessary for Gettysburg students to compete, but the right thing to do- and an important way for you to make a difference in their lives.

In 2010 Gettysburg's Center for Career Development began an intensive five-year campaign to create 1,832 new career-related opportunities for students by 2015. Thanks to supportive alumni, parents, and friends the College has exceeded that goal and has added 3,000 new and meaningful opportunities for students.

Now, the College embarks on a new challenge: add 2,000 more career-related opportunities by 2015.

Can you host a networking dinner? Provide a summer internship? Allow a student to shadow you or a coworker? Let students talk to you by phone about your own career? Whether you can give an hour or a summer's worth of time, there are students who would like to tap your expertise and experience.

Opportunities to Volunteer

  • Job Shadowing Host. One-day experiences in which students shadow alumni or parent volunteers in the workplace as they go about their day's work
  • Career Networking Dinners. Informal opportunities to network over dinner, often during winter break, with alumni or other career professionals who work in the student's field of interest.
  • Externship Host. Intensive, typically one-week "deep dives" into a workplace environment, offering in-depth insight into job and life demands of a career in the student's field of interest. Host often provides housing.
  • Internship Supervisor. Experiences in a professional workplace environment; typically part-time during the semester or part- or full-time in the summer.
  • Career Immersion Trips. An intensive three-day program in a major metropolitan area that gives students in-depth insight into a particular career field. Volunteers can get involved as a panelist, site visit host, provider of meeting space or host a meal or reception.
  • Employer Contact and Interviews. Connect current students with full-time job opportunities, possibly including on-campus interviews.
