Making Your Future Work - Parents

Parents are key to students' success. Parental involvement helps students get the most out of their educational investment.  The experience can be as valuable for parents who volunteer as for the students who benefit.

There are plenty of ways to benefit students: 

• Internships offer students hands-on workplace experience.
• Externships combine an internship with a stay in the workplace host's home, and help students see how to balance their personal and professional lives.
• The Gettysburg Career Connections online database links hundreds of alumni and parents with talented students - and with one another.

Making Your Future Work benefits parents too.  By volunteering your time and expertise, you can change a young person's life - and enhance your own.  Your participation gives you the opportunity to:

• Network with fellow alumni and with parents.
• Meet students who are excellent job candidates.
• Renew your connection to the "Gettysburg experience".

Gettysburg alumni and parents are organizing career-focused groups across the nation.  In partnership with our staff, Gettysburg's Great American Cities "hub" groups sponsor numerous activities in their local areas.  For example, "Bright Lights! Big City!" seminars bring students interested in a particular field together with experienced professionals, who help student sharpen their presentation and networking skills.

Other opportunities include career mentoring, speaking in class, job shadowing, reviewing resumes, conducting practice interviews, and grad school advising.
