Learn About Careers

Are you curious about careers?  You're not alone!  Most of your peers are in the same boat and are unsure about how to learn about possible career options.

Most students, from first-years through seniors, experience some confusion when it comes to learning about careers.  It is common for students to express an interest in careers which are familiar to them through family and friends.  Take a risk and see what else is out there!  The resources below are a good place to start.

  • See what types of careers are related to your major or area of interest at What can I do with my Major?
  • Need to learn about what industries exist and have access to downloadable career guides? Check out our subscriptions to exclusive collections inside GettysburgWorks (click Document Library under Quick Links after login).
  • Do you have an idea of the type of field you want to enter, but don't know what the job titles would be? Check out the Occupational Outlook Handbook which offers actual job titles, education needed, salary information, possible employers and much more!
  • Still unclear? Once you have narrowed down one or two fields of interest schedule an informational interview with an alumni or professional to learn more about their career field. Check out how you can connect with alumni for career advice and informational interviews.
  • Looking for more resources? Come into the Center for Career Development and check out the Career Library. Books on specific careers, everything from publishing, the travel and tourism industry, and jobs in the sciences.

After you do some researching through the above sites, call the Center for Career Development at 337-6616 and schedule an appointment with one of the career coaches to talk about the information you discovered!
