Get a Job
Before you start ... answer the questions below:
- What type of job(s) are you pursuing? (Summer Jobs here)
- Does a specific industry appeal to you?
- Where do you want to live and work?
- When you consider potential jobs and employers, what is most important to you?
If you can clearly answer the questions above then it is likely that you have a good idea of what you are looking for in a job. If your answers do not come so easily, then you may want to spend some time exploring and learning about careers, as well as reflecting on your experiences. Call ext. 6616 to schedule an appointment.
Our Online Job Searching Workshop is also available if you want quick access to get started.
What you will need... resume, cover letter, interviewing skills, and references. Resources such as career-related websites, and people play an integral part in your job search. They can help you identify available opportunities, conduct employer and job research (such as informational interviews), provide insight into industries, and expand your number of contacts. Read our Job Search Bulletin and sample Thank You Notes for more information.

Job fairs are a good way to meet and greet with several employers at one location in a relatively short amount of time. Gettysburg College is affiliated with the Cumberland Valley Consortium (CVC) job fair held each spring semester. Visit College Central for information about the next event. Students should review literature on how to make the most of a job fair.
International students should consult with Gettysburg College's international student advisor for specific questions about employment. Visit the U.S. Department of Labor's site for H1-B Visa disclosures. It lists employers that have submitted Labor Condition Applications. Search by employer name, state, and occupation family.
