CHEERS Peer Educators

 Orientation Skits

CHEERS, the peer education group that is sponsored by Health and Counseling Services, is very excited about the three skits that they perform during orientation.  They wrote the skits themselves because they are committed to making Gettysburg College a safe environment for everyone.  They particularly want the first year students to take the time to think about the choices they make as they navigate their way through their first year here.  One skit warns students about the dangers of alcohol poisoning. It gives very specific instructions about how to recognize if someone is in trouble and then how to call for help.  One skit warns students about how small the College is and how easy it is to get a bad reputation if you engage in certain unhealthy behaviors.  The third skit helps first year students to develop strategies for staying safe if they attend a party. It also emphasizes the importance of honest, sober communication when considering entering into a sexual relationship with someone.

CHEERS is noted for their humorous approach to serious topics.  They understand that students will listen and can learn a lot while laughing at the jokes and improv stunts that occur in each skit.  In fact, each year the skits change a bit because the individuals who act in them bring their own personality to the parts they play. Most of them are not acting majors.  In fact, many have never been on a stage before.  It is their commitment to what they are doing coupled with the genuine humor and energy that they bring to the program that makes these skits voted the most popular part of orientation year after year.
