INTERVIEW WITH CASSIE
How did you react/What did you feel when you heard you received this award?
I was completely shocked and surprised. It was an amazing feeling to have such a wonderful organization as the United Way recognize my efforts. I felt overwhelmed with feelings of "Wow, they chose me!" because I know there are so many people on this campus who do wonderful things everyday. I am extremely honored and looking forward to the ceremony event.
What are you involved in on campus? Which means the most and why?
I am actively involved in many different activities on campus. I am a member of the Women's Rugby team. Rugby has given me a great group of supportive friends and fun experiences with an interesting sport. I am a class Senator for the class of 2010. As a Political Science major Senate is a great way to gain experience in leadership and stay informed on campus. I am also a member of Delta Gamma. My job at CPS with Campus Kitchens truly means the most to me. I always feel that my time and energy is going into a great cause. The idea of salvaging food and turning it into healthy meals for the community is one that I deeply believe in. Also the Center for Public Service has taught me valuable life lessons about community development, professional development, social justice, and the importance of reciprocity.
What are you studying? Why?
I am studying Political Science here at Gettysburg, with a Sociology minor. I value our political system because the way we live our lives is greatly influenced by the people who run the country. Learning about the political process is important to me so I can be well informed on major issues facing the country. I have a minor in Sociology because the study of human interactions is fascinating to me.
What do you plan to do after Gettysburg?
I am not sure what I plan on doing after Gettysburg. Some ideas that I have thought of are the non-profit sector or working for the government.
What do you do for fun/relax?
For fun I enjoy spending time with my friends and decorating cakes.
What does this award mean to you?
This award means to me that my efforts working to end hunger and educate people about hunger in Adams County has paid off, and that other people realize the importance of the goals of Campus Kitchens. This award is a verification that what Campus Kitchen stands for and what it intends on doing is important and resonates with many different types of people. In today's world no one should go without food.
Advice for other students trying to find their passion?
My advice for other students trying to find their passion is to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. If you never step out of what is familiar you miss out on many of life's greatest adventures.
