ABOUT US

OUR STORY
Gettysburg College opened its doors in November 2007 as the first Campus Kitchen in PA! The project was initiated by Louisa Polos '07 and is currently managed by an Americorps*VISTA member as well as CPS Program Coordinators. Louisa first learned about The Campus Kitchens Project as a volunteer of DC Central Kitchen. She left inspired by the experience and wanted to start a program at her school, so she made it happen!

MISSION
The Campus Kitchens Project is to use service as a tool to:
  • Strengthen Bodies by using existing resources to meet hunger and nutritional needs in our community;
  • Empower Minds by providing leadership and service-learning opportunities to students, and educational benefits to adults, seniors, children, and families; and
  • Build Communities by fostering a new generation of community-minded adults through resourceful and mutually beneficial partnerships among students, social service agencies, businesses and schools.

HOW IT WORKS

  • Rescue:  Campus Kitchens rescues prepared, but unserved food, from Dining Services at Gettysburg College, local hotels, restaurants and caterers.
  • Repackage: The food is repackaged and combined with additional foods procured through food drives, local farmers and the food bank, resulting in a well-balanced, nutritious meal. This process requires the highest standards of safety and sanitation.
  • Deliver: Congregate and individual meals are delivered through partner agencies on a weekly basis. The delivery is accompanied by a visit, strengthening relationships in the community.
  • Education: Meals and partnerships are coupled with nutrition education and to empower community members.
NUTRITION EDUCATION & SUSTAINABILITY

During the summer of 2008, the Campus Kitchens Project and the Painted Turtle Farm at Gettysburg College brought together nutrition education with environmental education in a camp program, developing the ideas of sustainability and food security.  The GREEN GOODIES Project was funded by a grant from Projects for Peace and worked to foster healthy lifestyles and environmental responsibility in campers and college students through mutual learning experiences centered on food.

The GREEN GOODIES camp collaborated with the summer camp for children at The Center/El Centro to learn about aspects of nutrition and the environment.  Campers planted their own gardens at The Center/El Centro and worked each week on growing and harvesting their crops.  They also learned about organic farming and the use of pesticides.  To reinforce this learning, campers took a field trip to Broad Valley Orchard, where they were able to experience a thriving organic farm.  In the field of nutrition, campers  learned about the new Food Guide Pyramid, and got to experience hands-on what added fats and sugars look like in their foods and beverages.  They ended their lessons in nutrition by planning and making dishes to serve at the end-of-summer picnic at The Center/El Centro.

Megan Crowe '10 (CKP Nutrition Coorindator) and Margaret White '09 (El Centro Intern) collaborate to facilitate the GREEN GOODIES nutrition education class to the children at The Center/El Centro.
