WHAT IS D.C. OUTFITTERS?
D.C. Outfitters is a student run program which works out of the Center for Public Service. D.C. Outfitters, or DCO, gives volunteers the opportunity to spend an evening in the U.S. Capitol visiting with and offering clothing to individuals who face homelessness. DCO introduces volunteers to the effects of poverty and encourages discussions of how these issues can be adequately addressed.
With the Center for Public Service's slogan of "Think Critically, Act Compassionately" in mind, DCO quickly becomes more than the offering of clothes to individuals who face homelessness, but rather, transforms into an opportunity to learn that the face of homelessness is far from lucid. By engaging in conversation it becomes quickly evident that no stereotype, or even statistic, is effective for answering the question, "Who is homeless?", with the truth being that poverty and homelessness show no bias.
