Poverty in Adams County $325.00

A Brief Overview...

The economic crisis and generational poverty have had a severe impact on people in Adams County. This trip will explore the root causes of poverty and how it is manifesting itself in terms of housing, employment and education.

Participants will learn about poverty and promote sustainable communities by visiting local social service agencies, participating in a Socio-economic Quest, volunteering at the Campus Kitchen and working to rehabilitate local houses.

Mary will be a Program Coordinator at the Center for Public Service for her third year. She coordinated volunteers for the Adams County Literacy Council and girls empowerment programs for the YWCA. She also spent a summer with the Heston Summer Experience as an intern with the Adams County Shelter for the Homeless. She has spent much time working on poverty related issues in Adams County and will bring her experience to this leadership position.

Claire serves a Program Coordinator with the Center for Public Service and coordinates efforts for an after-school tutoring prorgam for migrant high school students in Adams County. Claire has been working closely with the spanish-speaking population in the area and will be able to include this experience as she leads this trip.

Megan is a Program Coordinator at the Center for Public Service. This will be her second year serving as the nutrition coordinator for the Campus Kitchen at Gettysburg College. She has a wealth of experience working in Adams County with college students, children and families on poverty and food justice issues, which compliments her academic experience in as a Health Science major. Megan's laughter, warmth and diligence makes her a great leader!

 

General Information

The group will stay in a hostel, sharing cooking and other responsibilities. Transportation will be provided through College vans, driven by a College-certified driver.

What to Bring

  • Pants / jeans for work sites (no shorts).
  • Short sleeve t-shirts / shirts / blouses for work sites (no tank tops or midriffs).
  • Two nice, casual outfits for restaurants and other events.
  • Outerwear as you feel appropriate for August in Virginia
  • Hat to wear at work site 
  • Seakers or shoes with rubber tread for work sites.
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Nightwear/pajamas (will be mixed-gender company in the hostel).
  • Toiletries.
  • Washcloth / towel / shower shoes.
  • Sleeping bag or sheets/blanket.
  • Pillow.
  • Prescriptions and/or over-the-counter medications for your use as appropriate.
  • Flashlight and travel alarm (optional, but recommended).
  • Small container of laundry detergent and quarters, should you wish to do laundry during the project.
  • Project Packet (manual/journal), pens/pencils. readings/handouts (provided upon arrival to campus).

What Not to Bring

  • DO NOT BRING OR WEAR any clothing or other items resembling military paraphernalia, including olive drab, camouflage, or any item having army-issue characteristics.  Clothing advertising alcohol, tobacco, or other inappropriate products/wording should be left at home.
  • DO NOT BRING any illegal drugs or alcohol, nor carry/pack firearms, explosives, knives, or anything that could be interpreted as potential weapons.
  • DO NOT BRING expensive equipment or jewelry that you cannot afford to lose.
