Road Trip May 26

Utah Highway

May 26 - Zion National Park

We drove into Zion National Park from the northwest entrance and weaved through the narrow roads.  We passed by Checkerboard Mesa and stopped for a short hike to petroglyphs.  After finding our campsite, we caught the shuttle into Zion Canyon for the day's hike, Angel's Landing.  This was a very difficult hike, up switchbacks, through Refrigerator Canyon, up the well-known steep Walter's Wiggles to Soout Overlook.  We held on to the rail to survey the 1000-foot climb we had made.  Then we continued the final 1000-foot ascent over the narrow sandstone spine with sheer vertical drops on either side.  None of us could believe that this is a well-traveled hike in a national park.

  • Overall height of Angel's Landing: over 5700 feet
  • Height of Angel's Landing: nearly 2000 from canyon floor
  • Narrowest part of trail: approximately 5 feet wide
  • Length of hike: 2 1/2 miles (one way)
  • Number of peregrine falcons spotted beneath us: 3
