History

The 1800s

1837: shorthand is developed, the first kindergarten classes are taught in Germany, Queen Victoria takes power in England, and Martin van Buren is President in the US.

In Gettysburg, Daniel Payne begins taking classes at the Lutheran Theological Seminary with the support of Samuel Schmucker . While he could not finish his studies due to bad health, Payne would go on to become a bishop, as well as president of Wilberforce University.
