Do You Really Exist?...and If Not, Why Does Tuition Cost So Much?: An Introduction to Metaphysics

We know what we think, but how much of what is in our heads is out there in the real world?  Is there a real world?  Are we free?  If not, are there coupons?  We will look at some of the deep challenges of metaphysics and what some smart dead people thought they could do to solve them.

Dr. Nathalie Goubet
Associate Professor, Psychology
The Nose Knows: The Role of Smell in Early Human Bonding

Newborns come to the world equipped to learn about their environment. In this course, we'll focus on the sense of smell as a major component in bonding. We'll talk about how newborns quickly learn to recognize what and who is important in their lives through their sense of smell.

Dr. Jing Li
Assistant Professor, Asian Studies
The Chinese New Year Prints: Aesthetics and Politics of Chinese Folklore

The topic will introduce the productive mode, cultural/religious significance, and functions of the Chinese New Year Prints (also called Nianhua), which are the essential and widespread decoration during the Chinese Spring Festival (the most important festival in China). The topic will also specifically look at a communist campaign of reforming these prints in the early years of PRC (People's Republic of China) and discuss the political use of folklore and the concepts of ‘cultural hegemony' and ‘resistance'.

Dr. Jackie Milingo
Assistant Professor, Physics
We Are Stardust

As Joni Mitchell, Carl Sagan, and Moby have all pointed out, we are made of star stuff. This course will examine the origin and evolution of some of the more common (and uncommon) elements on the periodic table from an astronomer's point of view. We'll survey the chemical composition of galaxies, stars, and planets and ponder how this composition informs the chemistry of our lives.

Dr. Tim Shannon
Professor, History
King of the Indians: The Incredible (But Not Quite Entirely True) Adventures of a Pennsylvania Indian Captive

As a child, Peter Williamson was kidnapped off the streets of Aberdeen and sold into servitude in Pennsylvania.  Taken captive by Delaware Indians at the outset of the French and Indian War, he escaped, joined the British Army, and eventually returned home, where he made his living by performing his story before audiences in taverns and coffeehouses.  In this talk, we will discuss my continuing efforts to separate the fact from the fiction in Williamson's incredible trans-Atlantic odyssey.
