Hello! My name is Kristin Largen and I am delighted to be serving as the Associate Dean of Religious and Spiritual Life/College Chaplain at Gettysburg College. I look forward to meeting you and being in conversation about issues of faith, doubt, life, relationships, God, human beings and creation. All of it, really—issues of religion and spirituality touch all of who we are and matter in so many ways in our thinking and being in the world.
Here is what you need to know about me. I was born in Colorado and I still consider Colorado the home of my heart. I know some people love the water, but I will choose the mountains every time! I attended Colorado College, and then attended Wartburg Seminary for my Master of Divinity degree. I received my Ph.D. in 2002 from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California in comparative theology, with special focus on both Mahayana Buddhism and Hinduism. If you are interested in my recent work, you can find my cv (pdf) here. I am an ordained Lutheran pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, the Church to which Gettysburg College is formally related.
I married John Largen in 2005, also a Lutheran pastor, and began serving at Gettysburg Seminary in 2006. I still teach there part-time, in the area of systematic theology, focusing particularly on comparative theology; my most current area of research is with Shin Buddhism. I also teach in 21st century theology, specifically with feminist and liberation theologies. I am the editor of Dialog: A Journal of Theology, and my most recent books are Finding God among our Neighbors, vol. 1 & 2 (Fortress Press, 2013 & 2017). You can read my blog at www.happylutheran.blog.
I am a runner, hiker, avid reader, longtime vegetarian and animal lover, and amateur harp player. I also am an avid Broncos fan, and last fall, I stood on the hallowed yard of the house in New Orleans where Peyton Manning grew up and learned to play football. Speaking of football, I also love real football—soccer, and if anyone else listens to the “Men in Blazers” podcast, make sure to let me know—I love those guys! John and I live here in Gettysburg and have a very sweet Jack Russell Terrier, Henry.
Currently, my office is upstairs in the Center for Religious & Spiritual life at 75 W. Stevens St. Please stop by and say hello—I’d love to meet you!
