First-Year Living

Residence hall living, a vital component of the Gettysburg Experience, is intended to facilitate the personal growth and development of each student. We have designed communities in which young people learn interpersonal skills, participate in their own governance, and are taught through various programs and group experiences. At "home" in the residence halls students make friends, attend classes, study, learn, relax and have fun.

All housing placements for first-year students are based on course selection and registration as a part of the First-Year Residential College Program. The Office of Residence Life assigns all first-year students to rooms according to their course registration. Part of the educational experience includes the opportunity to meet and live among different people. As all residence halls offer similar accommodations and opportunities, first-year students may not request a specific hall assignment. An effort will be made to honor specific roommate requests, as they correspond to course selection and registration. Housing is assigned to students at Gettysburg College without regard to race, color, religion, ethnic or national origin, age, physical challenge, or sexual orientation.

Gettysburg College offers a substance-free program, R.I.S.E. (Respecting Individual Student Expectations). Students who participate in this program make a commitment to a substance-free lifestyle - no alcohol consumption and no smoking.

For more information about important dates, such as when residence halls close and open for breaks and the beginning and end of each semester, please click here. All residence hall facilities managed by the College are officially smoke-free.

First-Year Halls
First-year students are assigned to housing based on their first-year seminar or English composition class. All first-year students live in either the East or West Quad.  To view the floor plan for a particular building floor, students should login to their CNAV account, select "MyHousing" from the first drop-down menu, and then select "Floor Plans" from the menu on the left side of the "MyHousing @Gettysburg College" page.

Personalizing Your Room:
When it comes to decorating your room, you may be as creative as you like.  Posters, plants, and throw rugs are a few typical items.  Please take care not to damage walls or floors with prohibited items like double-sided tape, tacks, and nails.

After the first year, students select their own housing through a lottery selection process during the Spring semester. As upperclass students a portion of the first-year class elects to live as part of the R.I.S.E. Program, while several groups of students choose to apply to live in Theme Housing.

Current students also have a variety of options regarding studying abroad, living on campus during the summer and during breaks, storing items on campus, and joining the residence life staff. For more information about any of these options, please see below.
