The Writing House is a collaborative effort between the English Department and the Office of Residence Life to provide a strong living and learning community focused on the exploration and celebration of written expression.

Each year, students living in the Writing House are exposed to a diversity of visitors, speakers, and activities.  Students meet regularly with professors and professional writers who are interested in expression . . . both how it is realized and how it is received. Specific activities include dinners with nationally known writers, readings, and field trips to cultural events.

The goal of The Writing House is to bring together students who share a common interest in writing. The forms of writing are varied, and include journalism, writing science, writing history, fiction writing, poetry writing, creative nonfiction, and dramatic writing.

The Writing House is under the mentorship of professors Fred Leebron and Kathryn Rhett.  Scott Wojciechowski coordinates the housing and overall programmatic organization.

Expectations and Requirements

Writing House residents are expected to:

• Attend all house meetings
• Be an active and contributing member of the Writing House community
• Actively plan and participate in house dinners, activities, campus readings, film nights, and field trips
• Take full responsibility for maintaining a clean community and personal living space
• Adhere to the guidelines set forth in the Student Handbook and Guidebook

Students applying for the Writing House must have a minimum 2.33 GPA and be in good standing with the College.  Current First-Year students must have at least 6 FYE points to be eligible.  Applicants are subject to a review of academic and conduct records and FYE completion.

Amenities

This housing options offers eight single rooms, a large kitchen, common area, and laundry in the basement of the building complex.  The Writing House is co-ed and billed at the single rate (Plan 1) for singles.  A meal plan is not required.

Timeline

Online Application Deadline: Friday, February 8 by 5:00 PM
Acceptance Notification: Monday, February 25
Room Selection: Evening of Tuesday, February 26

Placement of theme housing is concluded prior to spring break, so if you are not selected to participate in theme housing, you will receive a lottery number for online housing selection beginning in March.
