Outdoor Fires
All outdoor fires must be coordinated with the Fire/Life Safety Services in advance.
Campfires:
Campfires maybe permitted under certain circumstances and weather conditions, but a fire extinguisher always must be made available as well as a clear zone from any building or structure. A fire safety permit from Public Safety is required for any open fire. A minimum of 50 feet is required from any structure.
Bonfires:
Bonfires require a permit from the Borough of Gettysburg and Safety Services. All request must be submitted in writing and include the date and time of the event, location and materials to be burned. Only wood products are permitted to be burnt. A minimum of 100 feet from any structure and maybe extended depending on the size of the bonfire. Facilities Services will also need to approve the location of any bonfire due to the potential damages to the landscape and involves some cleanup. Some bonfires will require fire department standby with fire equipment depending on the size, weather conditions and location. The local fire chief will determine the fire suppression needs in coordination with Public Safety as well as local code enforcement authorities.
