Gettysburg College Commitment to Diversity

Gettysburg is committed to diversity in the fullest sense of that term-promoting a wide range of ideas and working to foster mutual respect among people of every race, ethnicity, economic class, religious preference, gender, physical ability, sexual orientation, and age.

Understanding difference goes to the heart of a liberal arts education. We believe strongly that meaningful interaction with others from different backgrounds and who have different ways of looking at the world is one of the best ways to build understanding and to prepare you for the diverse world into which you will graduate.

Although we hold each other to high standards, we know from experience that situations will occur that raise concerns about our commitment to diversity, and will sometimes cause division in our community. Therefore, we have created a team to help respond to these situations, and restore our campus community as quickly, yet efficiently as possible.

Purpose

The Bias Education & Advisory Council is a group of students, faculty, staff and administrators assembled to provide a steady response to acts of intolerance. This team will help to resolve conflicts by making recommendations on ways for the College to proceed. Recommendations can include, but are not limited to:

  • How the greater community will be informed (i.e., Digest, email, newspaper, etc.)
  • What is shared about the incident
  • If the incident can be resolved through the Restorative Justice process

The team’s goal is to discuss acts of intolerance, and determine how to hold people accountable for intolerable acts. Bias or hate incidents will not be tolerated on this campus, and such incidents will be addressed whenever and wherever they occur.

The Bias Education & Advisory Council

  • Allows those affected by bias to seek assistance or report incidents
  • Provides a comprehensive, coordinated and timely response to incidents of bias
  • Creates opportunities for dialogue
  • Signals to the community that the College takes these matters seriously
  • Enhances the intellectual climate of the community

Bias related incidents that violate provisions of the Gettysburg College Code of Conduct or Pennsylvania state law will be addressed through the College’s conduct process and/or the criminal courts. Bias related incidents that do not rise to the level of a violation of the Code of Conduct will be addressed through a restorative justice conference or circle.
