Work Hard. Play Smart.

What is Work Hard, Play Smart?

Work Hard. Play Smart. is a social norms campaign carried out by the Office of College Life and Student Rights & Responsibilities.

What are social norms?

Social norms are the perceived standards of acceptable attitudes and behaviors prevalent among the members of a community.

What does this have to do with Work Hard. Play Smart.?

Starting many years ago, colleges around the US began applying the social norms theory to drinking and drug use on campus. Work Hard, Play Smart is the theme of Gettysburg College's social norms program.

What's the goal of the program?

The goal of social norms campaign is the present students with the facts about alcohol and drug use on campus.

How does the message get out?

Most frequently posters, t-shirts, and other fun gifts (key chains, pens, white boards, etc.) are used to promote the messages. By using these methods, the college hopes to help the students discover the true norms on campus and therefore promote healthy and safe drinking habits.

Is this only an abstinence program?

One of the goals of the social norms program is to promote healthy and safe decision making around alcohol. For some this includes not drinking at all while for others it involves making smart decisions about alcohol use.
