Gettysburg at 175

Get ready to celebrate! Gettysburg College turns 175 on April 7, 2007.

Actually, you can already start celebrating. On October 14, at Homecoming Weekend, the College kicked off a year-long party to honor the founders of Pennsylvania College -- the College's original name -- and the many illustrious faculty, administrators, alumni, and others who have made Gettysburg one of the top liberal arts institutions in the United States. Rather than focusing on a single special event, the College chose to recognize its "centeseptequinary" throughout the academic year, from Orientation to Reunion Weekend. 175th Anniversary themes have also been built into the curriculum, both in existing courses and in development of new First-Year Seminars.

Throughout the year you will have the opportunity to listen to a variety of lectures and talks on the history of the College or attend exhibits that highlight the past of Gettysburg. Concerts are also planned, and three books -- An Illustrated History of Gettysburg College, by Michael Birkner '72; To Awaken Fond Memory, by Anna Jane Moyer; and Yonder Beautiful and Stately College Edifice by Professor Emeritus Charles Glatfelter '46 -- will be published to mark the occasion.

A 175th Anniversary website is also in progress, where you can learn more about the College's history and check up on the various events offered. Just go to www.gettysburg.edu/175.

For our part, we want to help get the celebratory mood started with a short photo gallery that highlights a few moments from the earlier parts of the College's long and illustrious history.

If you have story, photo, or special memory about your days as a Gettysburg student that you would like to share, please send it to the editor at jwikoff@gettysburg. edu or Gettysburg College, Gettysburg, PA 17325.
