Potuchek earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from Salve Regina College, and a master's degree and doctorate in sociology from Brown University. Her scholarly work focuses on issues of gender. She examined how dual-earner couples deal with the issue of breadwinning in Who Supports the Family? Gender and Breadwinning in Dual-Earner Marriages, published in 1997 by Stanford University Press. Most recently, she has been developing a new research project on "The Lives of Single Women," based on in-depth interviews she conducted with 35 unmarried women.
