Cavaliere earned bachelor's and master's degrees in biology from Arizona State University and a doctorate in botany from Duke University. A member of the Gettysburg faculty since 1966, he specializes in mycology - the study of mushrooms - and marine fungi and algae. His recent research interests have included fungal deterioriation of 18th- and 19th-century documents, Bermuda's seashore plants and seaweeds, and fungal growth infesting the murals in the tomb of Tutankhamun.
