Backup My Files

Backup in Windows XP
Backup in Windows Vista (will be updated soon)
Backup in Windows 7 (coming soon!)

Backup in Windows XP
Click start. Select All Programs. Select Accessories. Select System Tools. Click on Backup.

The "Backup or Restore Wizard" will open as shown below. Click "Next."

Ensure that "Back up files and settings" is selected, and click "Next."

Unless you know where all of the files you want to back up are located, select "Everyone's documents and settings." Click "Next."

You should not back up your files to your C: drive. This is where they are currently stored. In the event that your hard drive crashes, you want the backup to be located elsewhere so you can restore your data. You can choose a USB thumb drive or external hard drive by clicking "Browse," selecting "My Computer," and locating your device. Once you have selected a backup location, give the backup a name that includes the date (so you can restore the most recent backup), and click "Next."

A window like the one below will open to indicate the progress of the backup. This may take several hours depending on how much data you have.

Backup in Windows Vista (will be updated soon)
Click the start icon. Enter "backup" in the search bar at the bottom. Click on "Backup and Restore Center."

The "Backup or Restore Wizard" will open as shown below. Click "Back up files" and follow the instructions on screen.
