Gettysburg College uses a registration system for all computers and network devices connected to the network. The first time you plug your machine into the network, you are required to run through a series of steps to become a registered user of the network. This registration process protects both your machine and the college network from viruses and other potentially harmful activities.
1) Gettysburg College provides Symantec anti-virus. If you have an Anti-virus program other than Gettysburg Symantec anti-virus, you must remove your anti-virus software before you register your computer.
- To remove anti-virus software click Start then Control Panel
- Select Remove Programs.
- Proceed to remove all anti-virus software installed on your computer including LiveUpdate and LiveReg.
- After uninstall is complete restart your computer.
2) Launch your web browser, it will automatically go to the Registration Welcome page. This page contains helpful instructions on how to make sure you pass the network scan so that your access to the computer network is quick and seamless.
3) Browsers: The Preferred browser is Internet Explorer.
4) Follow the suggestions on the Welcome page. When you are ready, click "I am ready to register my computer".
5) Next, read and agree to the Gettysburg College Network Use Policy.
6) On the next page, enter your Gettysburg userID and password. Click on the download button.
7) A file download box will appear on your screen. Click on "Run".
8) If your computer fails the scan, click on the links in the failure box to meet registration requirements.
9) Once you have completed all items listed in the failure box, click on "I have completed all of the above requirements and I'm ready to Rescan My Computer"
NOTE: Please be patient during the registration process. Some routines may take several minutes to complete. If at anytime you have difficulties after completing all requested items, please close all browser windows and restart the registration process.
After all requirements are met, your computer will be joined to our campus domain. Your computer will be renamed to your userID, so that if you have problems in the future, IT will be able to identify you. Your domain account will also be added to the Administrators group on your computer so that if you choose to log in with your userID, you will have the same rights on your computer as you had previously.
If you need assistance with the registration process, call x6935 or stop in at the Gettysburg Technology Center.
Now that you are on the Gettysburg College Computer Network, the way in which you log into your computer will be different than it was before.
After you have passed the scan and rebooted you will be greeted with a screen that requires you to press the Control + Alt + Delete keys. For many of you, this will be the first time you have ever seen this screen.
*NOTE: you need to login to the Gettysburg domain to access the wireless network on campus.
Domain Login
The domain drop-down dialog box doesn't appear on the Vista logon screen. Instead, after pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE you will be presented with your local user name and computer name. Click the Switch User button then select the Other User option. The screen will then display a user name and password prompt. Enter your GETTYSBURG user name, for example johnad01, and password then press the Enter key.
Local Login
A local login on Vista is very similar to a domain login. After pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE you will be presented with a login screen. Instead of typing GETTYSBURG\username in the username field you would enter the local name of the pc followed by the user name which was used before Gettysburg Network Registration, for example, John-PC\John. Enter your password followed by the Enter key.
Local Login
When prompted, follow the on screen instructions and you will see the name of the account that you had previously logged into your computer with, followed by a blank password field. If you had a password before, you can enter it now. Click on Options. You will see a field that says "log on to "that should list your userID. That is the name of your local computer.
