Connecting to the Gettysburg College Wireless Network

Gettysburg College operates an 802.11b/g "WiFi" wireless network that covers the majority of the college campus. Some areas also have 802.11a coverage.

We support only two wireless cards. We support the wireless card built into the Gettysburg College Recommended Laptop (internal Intel Pro 2200 B/G). For those who do not have the college recommended laptop we also support the D-Link DWL-G122 USB wireless adapter. You may buy them from a retail store, or buy one from Information Technology (IT).

Other wireless cards may work but IT will not help you with registration, configuration, troubleshooting, setup or answer questions about them. If you use some other wireless card it may work but it is the users responsibility to get the card on the network and registered.

Three Requirements:

Operating system:

Windows XP-Professional with Service Release 2
Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4

Wireless Card:

Intel Pro 2200 B/G or
D-Link DWL-G122

Network Account:

You must have a Gettysburg College user ID and password. Your machine must already work properly on the WIRED College network.

How to setup your wireless

Step 1) Logging on to the Network:

If you have a firewall on your computer turn it off.

For XP: Go Start>Connect To; select > Show all Connections; Right Click on the Wireless Network card Select> Properties; Go to the Advance Tab; Select> Settings; Turn Firewall Off

Please continue with the instructions even if you can not disable the firewall!

Go to a location that has both a wired jack and wireless coverage (like the library). Connect your computer to the network using a network cable. Log on to the Gettysburg Domain using your user ID and password. After successful log on disconnect your network cable.

Step 2) Your wireless card takes over:

Your wireless should automatically take over and keep you connected. Start up Internet Explorer or Netscape. You should automatically get the Gettysburg College Computer Network Use Policy page. If you do not get the Policy page see troubleshooting.

Steps 3) Now register your machine:

Accept the policy. Your computer will be scanned (be patient it could take several minutes). The scan should report 0 security vulnerabilities (if problems are detected see troubleshooting section).

Click To Continue. Enter your user ID and password and click apply. You should see Congratulations; you have successfully registered on the Gettysburg College network. If not, see the Troubleshooting Section. After successful registration please disable your wireless card.

How: Go Start>Connect To; select > Show all Connections;
Right Click on the Wireless Network Connection Select> Disable

Step 4) Wait until tomorrow to use your wireless card:

The system only processes wireless registration 4 times a day. Your wireless card will not work until this happens. Wait 24 hours before you enable your wireless connection.

How: Go Start>Connect To; select > Show all Connections;
Right Click on the Wireless Network Connection Select> Enable

If you can not use your wireless connection after waiting a full 24 hours, please open up a help desk request.
