Updating your Virus Protection
It is critical that all students, staff, faculty, and anyone associate with Gettysburg College update their virus scanner to prevent an infection of a computer virus and its spread. It is important to update your virus defintion files on a daily basis!
Please Note: Anti-Virus Updates
Our Norton Anti-Virus Server looks for updates 4 times a day. If it finds updates, these are immediately pushed to the client machines. In addition, LiveUpdate is configured on each client to run with the following schedule:Administrative machines: 11:00am daily
Academic machines: 12:00pm daily
Student machines: 11:00am dailyAnti-Virus Installs
A forced NAV install is performed any time we detect a machine on the network without any type of anti-virus product installed. If a product is detected that is not our college purchased product, the user is contacted by Computing Services and asked to bring their computer into compliance or to allow a member of Computing Services to perform the install for them.Anti-Virus Scans
Virus scans are performed on a weekly basis. The schedule is as follows:Administrative machines: Fridays at 12:15pm
Academic machines: Fridays at 12:00pm
Student machines: Fridays at 11:00amIn addition, if a client computer is suspected as being infected, a scan is performed immediately.
All computers on campus should have Norton Antivirus installed. To manually update your virus scanner, follow the steps outlined below:
- Double Click the gold shield icon located on the bottom right hand corner of your screen in the Windows taskbar.

(Note: You can also open the Norton Antivirus program by clicking the Start > Programs > Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition > Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition
- The Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition application will open (similiar to the picture below)
- Click the Live Update... button to begin updating your virus protection
- When prompted select Next
- Your computer will go to Norton's webserver and download appropriate antivirus updates. When all updates have been downloaded, click Finish.
- Now that you have completed your virus update, you will want to scan your computer for viruses.
