Preparing Graphics for Use in Webpages

Scanning Images

Bring a book, photograph, or any additional image media to the basement of Musselman Library. Use one of the self-service scanning stations in the Digital Center to scan the photograph and save it as a file on the personal computer attached to the scanner. For scanning assistance consult one of the Digital Center facilitators (DCF's) located at the Digital Center helpdesk.

The helpdesk is staffed during the following hours:

  • Monday-Thursday 10am-10pm
  • Friday-Saturday 10am-8pm
  • Sunday noon-10pm

Copying Graphics from the Web

lace your mouse over the image you want to save. Windows Users: Right click on the image. A popup menu will appear. Macintosh Users: Click and hold the mouse down on the image. A popup menu will appear. Select Save this image as... (if using Netscape) or Save this picture as... (if using Internet Explorer). Choose the location where you want to save the image.

  • If you are just storing the file temporarily, choose the Desktop.
  • If you will use the file in another document, you may wish to save the image in the same folder as that document.
  • If you will use the file in a web page, save the image directly to the UFS drive with your userid on it (ex: smitjo01 on Acad_serv) and make sure you save it in your public_html folder on that drive.
Either take the default file name if one appears and you want to use it, or type in the file name you wish to use, keeping the default file ending. Remember that web image file names usually end in either:
  • .gif for GIF format images
  • .jpg for JPEG format images
Click Save.

Using a Digital Camera to Create Images for Use in Web Pages

Circulating digital cameras are available from the Digital Center. They may be reserved at the Digital Center helpdesk located in the basement of Musselman Library, or electronically through the Digital Center reservation tool . Should you experience difficulties, call the IT helpdesk at 7000.

Once you have taken the photographs you wish to place on web pages, use a Digital Center computer to transfer the images for upload and display on web pages.

Using Software to Create Graphics for Use in Web Pages

Graphs and charts from spreadsheet programs such as Excel, and clipart or other images can easily be incorporated into web pages.

Graphics for web pages can also be created by using any graphic package which creates images which can be saved or converted into .gif of .jpg formats. A number of graphic packages are available on the computers in the drop in clinic as well as on other computers on campus.
