Application Information

Watch the 3D Printer at work.


Students will study 3D object modeling and printing starting with the basics of a 3D printer. A study of the software needed to communicate between the 3D printer and computer will follow next. After students learn the fundamentals of printing existing 3D objects, they will practice designing objects made from basic geometric shapes.

Students will work directly with a 3D printer connected to a personally owned computer or to a computer provided by the College. At the end of the camp, students will take their 3D printer home with them along with any software loaded onto their personally owned computer. Each student will also go home with a memory stick containing the software used at the camp.  Students will be provided with PLA for printing 3D objects which is biodegradable and an environmentally friendly plastic.


  • Setup and configuration of 3D printers
  • Printing parameters and configuration options
  • Scaling, rotating, and positioning 3D objects
  • Slicing 3D objects and comparing different slicing programs
  • Designing and modeling 3D objects with various open source 3D modeling programs

This is a novice level course with no previous 3D object modeling or printing knowledge needed. Fundamental computer knowledge is required.

Erin Brady graduated from Gettysburg College in 2015 with a B.A. in Mathematics and a minor in Computer Science and Education.  In the fall of 2015, Erin earned her Teacher Certification in Mathematics from Pennsylvania.   Erin has taught summer coding camps for the Johns Hopkins University. Erin also designed and implemented an introduction to programming course her senior year at Gettysburg. Erin is passionate about computer science education and is excited to be working at a summer camp that blends two passions together - teaching and technology.

Gavin Foster has a B.A. in English Literature from the University of Leeds (UK) and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Washington University in St. Louis.  He became interested in technology and social change while writing his dissertation and has worked in Information Technology since 2001 supporting academic and administrative processes.  He has over twenty years of teaching experience in writing and literature courses at Washington University in St. Louis and Gettysburg College.

Dr. Rodney S. Tosten is the Vice President for Information Technology. Rod graduated from Gettysburg College with a B.A. in Mathematics in 1985 and returned in 1990 to teach computer science in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.  Due to his experiences in a family car business, Rod stays active with small businesses including Eagle Software which specializes in software for transmission shops and PoCo Paper, a post-consumer paper art company. Rod also took a two year leave of absence from the college to work for a software startup company. Rod received his M.S. in Computer Science from West Virginia University and his Ph.D. in Information Technology and Engineering from George Mason University. Rod is a past chair of the Department of Computer Science which the College formed in 1999. Rod is also a certified Pennsylvania State Inspection Mechanic. For relaxation, Rod is involved with woodworking, archery, and model railroading.

Application Deadline: Applications will be accepted until May 1, 2016 and will be considered on a rolling basis. We have limited space so we recommend that you submit an application as soon as possible. We receive applications from many more qualified applicants than we can admit. Once admitted, campers will receive instructions for completing online registration. When the camp is full, registration will close.
