I-9 Information Guide
What is the I-9 Form Exactly?
- Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA)
- Took effect on November 6, 1986
- Requires that employers only hire individuals who have a legal right to work in the United States
- The I-9 Form provides a record for the government to access verifying an employer's compliance with the IRCA
Section 1. Key Points�
- This section must be completed on the student's first day of work
- The student employee completes this section, never the supervisor
- This section must be completed in front of a Gettysburg College employee
- Must use home address
- The supervisor only reviews this section for completeness and obvious errors
- Make sure that one of the three boxes is checked in the lower right corner of Section 1
Section 2. Key Points
- Only the supervisor completes this section
- Section 2 is used to establish the student employee's identity and eligibility to work in the U.S.
- The student employee has three business days to present this information to his/her supervisor. If the student employee is unable to present this information within the first three days of work, he/she must stop working.
- Take either one document from LIST A, or one document from LIST B and one document from LIST C
- Only the student chooses which documents to present. DO NOT suggest a driver's license and social security card. Refer to the back of the form and let the student choose.
- Each document must be an original (NO COPIES)
- Take down the document name, issuing authority, number and the expiration date.
- If the student presents his/her Social Security Card, include the student's name as it appears on the document
- Laminated Social Security Cards are not valid
- Enter the student's first day of employment in the text portion of Section 2. DO NOT back date!
- Then sign and print your name. And include your title, "Gettysburg College", and today's date.
- International students should be directed to the Payroll Office on the 2nd floor of Penn Hall.
