Greetings from President Janet Morgan Riggs '77
Welcome to Gettysburg College. We invite you to visit us, in person or through this website, to learn more about Gettysburg's vigorous and engaging liberal arts experience and to explore our historic campus.
Gettysburg College is a beautiful place to explore. Its tree-lined walkways and stately buildings echo its legacy as a liberal arts institution, set in one of America's best-known small towns. Our history is intertwined with some of our nation's most defining moments; as a result, we have a heightened awareness of the responsibilities of citizenship in this special place where one of the Civil War's defining battles took place and where President Abraham Lincoln delivered his healing words to a divided nation.
Our mission statement identifies us as an undergraduate college committed to a liberal education that prepares students to be active leaders and participants in a changing world. We provide an academic experience that is designed to challenge and engage each of our 2600 students. They develop their interests, skills, and abilities through a strong academic program, through collaboration with faculty on topics of mutual interest, and through participation in a host of co-curricular activities, including athletics, music, drama, student government, outdoor recreation, and community service. Gettysburg students are famous for forming and shaping their own clubs and organizations. More than 120 student organizations now exist, some over a century old and others formed just this year.
I believe passionately in the capacity of higher education to transform lives, and as a Gettysburg alumna, I feel very privileged to have benefited from many mentors and role models during my undergraduate years here. Although many things have changed at Gettysburg since my days as a student, that kind of highly personalized learning experience that Gettysburg makes possible for each of its students continues to be a great institutional strength.
Here at the Gettysburg College website, you will find much more detailed information about the people, programs, and events that make up the fabric of this place. If you are new here, I offer you a warm welcome; we hope you will take time to learn more about what makes Gettysburg special. If you are already a member of the Gettysburg College family, I will say, simply, Welcome home.
