The Qualifications

The promise of Gettysburg College is: "We prepare students to lead energetic, engaged, and enlightened lives." Our next President will need to affirm and embrace these qualities.

The College seeks an accomplished, energetic leader with thevision and experience to engage its many constituencies in enhancing theCollege's national visibility and financial resources, while furthering itscommitments to a rigorous liberal arts education with a global perspective,dedication to public service, and an enriching campus life.

Successful candidateswill show evidence of the following:

• substantial experience or clearly demonstrated potential ability to raise funds in support of an institution's strategic initiatives;
• enthusiastically representing an institution and its aspirations to external constituencies;
• dynamic leadership and a collaborative management style, with ability to empower a committed and talented faculty and staff;
• ability to lead an institution in strategic planning, prioritization and implementation;
• strong operating, finance, and resource management skills; 
• promoting diversity in students, faculty, and staff, as well as in the curriculum;
• understanding of the demographic and economic issues and policies affecting higher education; and
• commitment to academic excellence and familiarity with issues related to co-curricular learning, globalization, undergraduate research, and civic engagement. 

To function best in theGettysburg College community, the President should be:

• a passionate champion for the values and mission of Gettysburg College;
• able to develop and articulate a clear and differentiated vision for the College;
• innovative and willing to take measured risks for the achievement of excellence;
• capable of exploiting opportunities and the distinctive characteristics of the College to the benefit of our College community;

• able to work effectively and sensitively with diverse populations including faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents, community members, volunteer leaders, and trustees;

• a clear, motivational communicator, who inspires confidence and trust;
• willing and able to make timely and strategic decisions;
• warm and empathetic, with the ability to forge meaningful connections and relationships on behalf of the College; and
• a person of balanced energy and the highest personal integrity.
