My Story from Global Study:

When I arrived in Copenhagen, I had already been up for almost 24 hours, as the flight across the Atlantic was overnight and I don’t sleep well on planes.  My host father, Torben, picked me and my homestay roommate up from the program organizers at the airport in the late afternoon Danish time.  At that point all I wanted to do was sleep, but Torben said he was going to take us out to dinner after we had an hour or so to settle in.  While my roommate and I were tired we were happy to go along.  We went to a restaurant in the city where we were given massive portions of traditional Danish foods. It was delicious.  After the meal we went bowling with Torben and a many of his friends who we would get to know well over the next few months.  We didn’t get back to the house until after 1 am.  While were we completely exhausted it had been a great introduction to Copenhagen, the people we were going to be living with for the rest of the semester, as well as Danish culture and hospitality.  It was a fantastic first day and preview of the semester that was to come.

My Advice for Future Students:

Make sure to meet local people and students whenever possible. It can be tempting to spend your time with just American students, but you can do that anywhere.  Step out of your comfort zone to meet new people, and I guarantee the friends you make and experiences you have will be more than worth the effort.
