My Story from Global Study:

We took a class trip to Verona, and while we were there we went to see the Synagogue. Apparently, Verona has one of the biggest Jewish communities in Italy, and their Synagogue is one of the biggest. My dad's family is Hungarian Jewish, so I was very interested in learning more about Judaism in Italy. While we were inside, an old man came up to our tour guide, and we started talking to him. Our tour guide began to translate for this man. He was a boy during the Holocaust, and the only reason he and his parents survived is because they hid for the majority of the war. He was in tears as the tour guide relayed to us that he had lost his cousin, who was only fourteen years old at the time. "Being rich isn't because of what's in a man's pocket," the old man said, pointing at his chest. "But what's in his heart. Treat each other with kindness. It's the only thing we can do."

My Advice to Future Students:

My advice is that sometimes, things don't work out for a reason. For my whole live I knew I wanted to study abroad in Italy, but I was also sure that I wanted to study in Rome. I was really sad and disappointed that Gettysburg didn't have a program in Rome yet, and I was considering reaching to an outside program. At the last minute, I decided to go with the CIEE Ferrara program that was linked with Gettysburg. Now? I can't believe I ever thought about going to Rome-- Ferrara was the perfect fit for me, and the experiences, friends, and memories I made there will always be dear to me.
