My Story from Global Study:

“Travelling. It leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” This quote perfectly describes any student’s experience abroad. As a junior, I studied abroad in Wollongong, Australia. One of my favorite memories was when I went on the Broken Bay excursion through my study abroad provider, Arcadia. During this weekend trip, we went to Broken Bay resort, a little cabin complex near Sydney. We spent part of the weekend hiking, waking up to see the sunrise, and having campfires, but that was not my favorite part.

While on this trip, we went on a yacht tour of the bay and learned about the Australian Aboriginal people. We got to hear a didgeridoo, a long pipe style instrument, see the historical rock paintings of the Aboriginal tribes and learn about their culture in general. Most people think of Australia as a beach area, but there is much more than beaches. Learning the history of Australia, like on this Broken Bay trip, made my experience abroad a hundred times better.

My Advice for Future Students:

If I were to give any advice to students who are considering studying abroad, I would say to go abroad and be willing to try new things as well as seek out opportunities to learn about your study abroad country’s history/culture. When you pick where you are going to study abroad, make sure you look at the whole country, not just your study abroad university’s town. I knew I wanted to study abroad in Australia, but I did not expect to learn history as well as observe in the Australian school districts while I was there. No matter where you go, you will have some of the best experiences and learn more about yourself too. You’ll never regret going abroad.
