Former NBC "Nightly News" anchor Tom Brokaw was the keynote speaker for the Dedication Day ceremony in the Soldiers' National Cemetery. The 45th Annual Robert Fortenbaugh Memorial Lecture, "The Man and the Martyr: Abraham Lincoln in African American History and Memory" was delivered by Drs. James and Lois Horton. Historical novelist Jeff Shaara presented E.L. Doctorow ("The March") with the 2006 Michael Shaara Prize for Excellence in Civil War Fiction.
