Salaries and Compensation Charts and Graphs
The Faculty Finance Committee will report comparative salary and compensation information at the April 20 faculty meeting. The data just became available from AAUP and will be posted under governance on the Provost¿s Office web site as well. Faculty can review the information and address any questions not raised at the faculty meeting to the committee.
The Faculty Finance Committee¿s 2006 report contains comparative salary and compensation information on several Excel sheets. To access the various charts and tables, please click on the tabs at the bottom of the Excel page. One sheet contains a data table and is labeled ¿Faculty Salary and Compensation Comparisons for Fiscal ¿06¿ It gives salary-only information in the left set of columns, and total compensation information in the right set of columns. For simplicity, the descriptions below will address salary-only information, but please don¿t forget to refer to the total compensation information (including retirement, health insurance, life insurance, tuition benefits, etc.) from time to time.
We compare Gettysburg to 18 other colleges in three groups:
Group 1 (Reach)
Group 2 (Like) Group 3 (Watch)
Bates Connecticut College Allegheny
Bucknell Denison Hobart & William Smith
Colgate Dickinson Juniata
Hamilton Franklin & Marshall Muhlenberg
Trinity (CT) Lawrence Univ. (WI) Ursinus
Washington & Lee Union Washington Coll.
The schools in Group 1 are considered our ¿reach¿ institutions, those in Group 2 (like) are most similar to Gettysburg College, and the schools in Group 3 (watch) are those we want to be sure do not overtake us.
At the top of the ¿Faculty Salary and Compensation¿ spreadsheet, in the left set of columns, is the average salary then median (of the means) salary at each rank of first, all 18 schools, then for each group. Line 20 shows Gettysburg¿s average salary at each rank. If you activate the ¿Current Year Comp.¿ sheets, lines 2 through 80, you can see two graphs of this salary information (the same graphs for total compensation are on the second page).
The next set of numbers (lines 20-24) shows Gettysburg¿s salary as a percent of that of the 18 colleges and for each group. For example, our full professors¿ average salary divided by the 18 college average is $91,849/$91,563 = 100.3%. Following the percentages is a section labeled ¿Rank in Group¿ (lines 26-30). Looking at full professors again, we find that their average salary is eleventh among the 18 colleges. We are seventh when compared to the Group 1 schools; that is, all six Group 1 schools have a higher average full professor salary than we do. Gettysburg is fifth among the Group 2 schools, with four schools above our average and one below. With respect to Group 3, Gettysburg ranks first; none of the Group 3 schools has a higher average salary at any rank than we do.
The ¿Average Difference¿ section (lines 32-35) compares our salaries in dollars to that of the 18 colleges and for each group. Another example, our full professors¿ average of $91,849 is $118 more than the group 2 (like) average of $91,732.
For years Gettysburg College has compared its salary and compensation to that of the 95th percentile of AAUP schools in Group IIB. Lines 44 and 45 show what the average salaries are in both the 90th and 95th percentiles of that group. Line 47 shows our average salary as a percent of the 95th percentile, and line 49 shows in dollars how far we are from that average. Multiplying that difference by the number of faculty at each rank shows how many dollars would be needed to bring us up to the 95th percentile: $554,435 for full professors, $497,259 for associates and $217,406 for assistants, or a total of $1,269,100 for all ranks combined which increases the gap from last year¿s total of $1,112,330.
We also present a five-year trend of Gettysburg¿s faculty compensation in table and graph form. The trend is gradually upward and shows average compensation, average change, percent change and cumulative change over this period.
We added three tables showing salary data for continuing faculty for each of the three ranks in all 18 comparison schools and the consumer price index (CPI) for the past three years. Continuing faculty are individuals who were in the same rank the prior year so that the comparisons can be more uniform.
The ¿Adjusted¿ spreadsheet (to be made available next week on the Provost web page) repeats all of the above analysis - except for the AAUP Group IIB comparison ¿ with the cost of living adjustments for the various regional metropolitan areas of our comparison schools.
