Ancient Ritual Objects of China
November 20 - December 5, 2009
Reception: Friday, November 20, 5-7 p.m.
Special Collections at Gettysburg College contains an extensive compilation of Asian Art spanning several millennia. The works in the exhibition "Ancient Ritual Objects of China" at Schmucker Art Gallery display the expansive use of decorative objects in Ancient Chinese ritual practices, as well as the two major media employed by Chinese artists of the time. Burial practices and the concept of the afterlife were enormously important ideas to Ancient Chinese peoples. This exhibition elucidates the practice of sacrificial offerings and preparation for the afterlife through an explanation of the works and their functions during ritual practice.
