Confronting the Bigger Picture
When planning the first of three informal meetings, Charlottesville, white supremacists, Confederate statues, and the political power of memory were consuming my attention. Since then, much more has happened – Trump’s remarks about Charlottesville, his pardoning of Joe Arpaio, the ban on transgender people in the military, DACA, and so much more. A colleague helped me see the bigger picture: all this adds up to a president with authoritarian tendencies tapping into nativism and racial resentment in America. The starting point for the discussion on the 21st will be the bigger picture confronting us and how we should or might address these issues inside and outside the classroom. A few short readings will be posted on the JCCTL website before our meeting. Click on the Teaching Resources tab.
Teaching in These Times discussions will be held on Thursdays in
Glatfelter 301, 4:00 p.m.—5:00 p.m.
