Merida
Program in Brief:
This semester or year long program is for students from all academic departments who are in good academic and social standing and have completed Spanish 202. Students enroll directly in three courses at the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán (UADY) and take one language and one culture course designed for program students, which are also taught in Spanish.
Orientation:
There is a mandatory Send-Off Session at Gettysburg College for all off campus studies students the semester prior to the program. An on-site orientation is held in Mexico upon arrival.
Location:
Mérida (population 800,000) is an attractive provincial capital with extant architecture from the colonial era. The Yucatán peninsula is a rich and distinct region of Mexico, heavily influenced by Maya peoples and a historical trajectory that differs from central Mexico. It provides a wealth of opportunities, including exploring archaeological ruins and natural wonders, such as cenotes, beaches, and tropical forest.
Living Arrangements:
Students live in a mandatory homestay and take meals with their host family.
Courses and Crdits:
All off campus programs are worth 4 Gettysburg Course Units. In order to receive this, students must take a "full load of courses" which is equal to 15-17 semester hours of credit on this program.
Program Cost:
Students pay the Gettysburg comprehensive fee (in 2008-2009 it is $23,350 per semester) and receive tuition, room, board, and flight.
Application Deadline:
March 15 (for Fall Semester or academic year)
October 15 (for Spring Semester)
