ACADEMICS

Eligibility Requirements

The stronger student you are, the greater variety of programs you will have to choose from.  In order to apply for off campus studies all students:

• Must be in good academic standing (a 2.0 cumulative GPA).
• Must be in good disciplinary standing (which means you must not be on conduct probation and you must have fewer than 6 points on the Alcohol and Drug Policy Points System).
• All students must spend the semester prior to off-campus studies, on campus at Gettysburg College and have spent a minimum of one year in residence.
• Must be a junior or first semester senior (if you are interested in going abroad at a different time, please contact OCS)

 In order to stay eligible for study abroad:

• Must have declared a major
• Must not have any "Incomplete" or "NG" grades in the term prior to departure.
• Must have at least a 2.0 term GPA in the semester prior to studying off campus. If a student drops below a 2.0, an updated transcript will be sent on to the student's program for review.

Permission to study off campus will be rescinded for any student who does not meet these criteria.

Credit/Grade Transfer

In order to keep the off campus studies academic experience as seamless as possible, students take a "full load" of courses on any off campus program, which will then transfer back to Gettysburg as 4 course units (which is our on-campus "full load" equivalent). 

• Many off campus programs have different credit systems than Gettysburg, so you might need to take more than - or less than - 4 classes to equal 4 Gettysburg course units.
• The key to staying on track with credits is to take a "full load" of courses or credits as defined by your program and that will transfer back to Gettysburg as a "full load" of credit - 4 Gettysburg course units.
• Students studying off campus are not permitted to take an "overload" of classes during an off campus studies term and may never transfer back more than 4 credits.

Students participating in Affiliated Programs will receive credits AND grades for the courses they take.  All grades will show on your Gettysburg transcript (A-F) and they will be factored into your Gettysburg GPA. 

All courses taken on Non-Affiliated Programs (or any other programs) are transferred to Gettysburg as credit ONLY, assuming you receive a C- or better.  If you receive a grade lower than a C-, you will not receive credit for the course.  Grades on Non-affiliated Programs are important, however, particularly for those students whose GPA at Gettysburg makes them eligible for graduation honors.  In these cases, grades from Non-affiliated Programs will be factored into your overall record in order to assure you maintain your honors eligibility.  Additionally, graduate schools will also request copies of transcripts from all of the institutions that have issued you a transcript.

PARTICIPATION IN COUNTRIES UNDER A US STATE DEPARTMENT TRAVEL WARNING

Gettysburg College encourages students to explore all parts of our world. At any given time, countries may be placed under a US Department of State Travel Warning due to specific risks associated with travel to that country. If a student wishes to apply to study in a country under a Travel Warning, Gettysburg College requires the student and family to sign a secondary waiver acknowledging and accepting these additional risks prior to departure.  If a student is studying in a country when a Travel Warning is issued, the student will need to sign a secondary waiver on site and return it to Gettysburg College or the student will need to make arrangements to return home immediately.
