Why I joined the GLGC:
Studying abroad (twice) was the best decisions I have made in College. Studying in a different country in today's world opens your mind in ways that classroom learning simply cannot. There has been an upward trend in off-campus studies participants and the GLGC can definitely help students figure out where they will gain the most from studying abroad and what to expect when studying in somewhere foreign.

Study Abroad Location and Semesters:
Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, Fall 2010
Major/Minor:
Political Science major, Peace and Justic Studies minor
Hometown:
Pound Ridge, NY
Favorite Abroad Experience:
This is a really difficult question that I find myself struggling to answer every time it is asked because as cliché as it sounds, I loved everything I did there so I can’t pinpoint one particular favorite experience. From my host families in Dublin and Derry, to the scenery of the Wicklow Mountain National Park and the Aran Islands, to my small seven-person group, to the Irish people, to the food, to the pubs, to the heritage, to my family’s visit, to traveling in and around the entire island, every single thing made my abroad experience absolutely unforgettable.
Why I joined the GLGC:
I felt alone in the fact that I had just completed a four-month excursion and I felt like my friends and family were sick of me talking about everything Irish day in and day out. I found it hard not to reference my trip considering I had just returned home. When I heard about the GLGC opportunities where I could reflect on and share my abroad experiences while encouraging others to do the same, I seized it. While I know my friends and family never actually said “Martha, enough about Ireland!” it is comforting to know that I have fellow GLGCers to talk to about our foreign excursions.
What I want to do after graduation:
I hope to continue on to law school immediately out of college. At this point, I am interested in Family Law and I want to work with victims of domestic abuse and child abuse. I without a doubt plan on traveling back to Ireland and Northern Ireland to make even more memories in a place that had become very much my home for four months.

Study Abroad Location and Semesters:
Florence, Italy, Fall 2010
Major/Minor:
Sociology major, Health Sciences minor
Favorite Abroad Experience:
Overall, my favorite abroad experience was living in a host family. My host mother, Grazia, has influenced my life in so many different ways. Not only did she teach me so much about the Italian culture, she taught me the basics of being a globally minded person. Everyday spent with Grazia was a blessing. I do not believe that I would have appreciated the Italian culture and society as much as I did if I was not living in such a caring and loving environment.
Why I joined the GLGC:
I joined the GLGC to encourage my peers here at Gettysburg College to go abroad. I want to spread the word of how incredible studying abroad is. Gettysburg College provides such excellent means for studying wherever a student desires to do so. It would be a shame to not take advantage of the excellent resources that are available.
What I want to do after graduation:
After graduation, I would like to live in Israel. There, I am hoping to further my Sociological interests as well as pursuing photography.

Study Abroad Location and Semester(s):
Cochabamba, Bolivia Fall 2009 and Santiago, Chile Spring 2010
Major:
Globalization and Sociology
Hometown:
Nashua, NH
Favorite abroad experience:
My favorite experiences abroad were meeting locals and developing lasting friendships with people from a completely different culture than my own. Some of the best memories I have are spending time with my host families and traveling with my new friends in Bolivia and Chile. One moment that stands out in my mind is when I was listening to the World Cup final game taking place in South Africa on a jeep radio from a salt flat in Bolivia with people from the U.S., Chile, Spain, and Denmark. Globalization at its finest.
Why you joined the GLGC?
I joined GLGC so that I can continue to reflect on my time abroad and on how these experiences have helped to shape me.
What do you want to do after graduation? I plan to head back to South America and work/volunteer for a year before going to grad school for International Development.
Study Abroad Location and Semester(s):
Aix-en-Provence, France for the fall of 2009
Major:
Studio Art
Hometown:
Churchville, PA
Favorite abroad experience:
We spent a week with my art school, The Marchutz School of Art, painting and studying in Monet’s gardens in Giverny, France. The exposure to that kind of beauty was a true highlight of my time abroad. That coupled with the terrific living arrangements my classmates and I had made that week a true gem of an experience. What’s better than living with your best friends in a beautiful old home, painting in Monet’s gardens by day and playing card games and hanging out at night? Nothing.
Why you joined the GLGC?
My time spent in France revolutionized the way I look at education, particularly art education. I’ve been encouraged, through my program, to grapple with difficult art related concepts and to emerge with my own well articulated and grounded understanding. The tenacity needed to perform well there is now being applied to my daily life in Gettysburg.
What do you want to do after graduation? After graduation I plan on attending graduate school to pursue my interests in either art therapy or art education. I look forward to my future school endeavors, but I know I will be returning to my abroad institution as soon as possible!

Major:
History and French
minor in Economics
Hometown:
Easton, CT
Favorite Abroad Experience:
The last week we were in France, my closest friends and I decided to have a cultural jubilee of sorts. The night before most of us left, we threw the money-saving tactics we'd been following all semester out the window and went out to a fancy, authentic, and, of course, expensive restaurant. We drank wine from the local vineyards, ate mussels soaked in pesto sauce, duck cooked to perfection, stuffed tomatoes, carrot purée, rice with herbes de provence, and, my favorite, crème brûlée à la lavande, or crème brûlée with a lavender infusion. We spoke with our waiter and to each other in French, laughed, reminisced, and sat at our four-course meal for about four hours, and we all finally understood the real meaning of a true "French" dining experience.
Why you joined the GLGC?
I joined GLGC because I wanted to be able to both build upon and continue the lessons and ideals I learned while I was abroad.
What do you want to do after graduation?
Post-Graduation I would like to return to France to participate in a teaching program, after which I will return to the U.S. and enroll in a Graduate Program of History for my Ph.D. Of course, there's always the plan B goat farm with my fellow study abroad-er Dori Zweig.
Study Abroad Location and Semester:
Salamanca, Spain. Academic year 2009-2010
Major:
Political science, Film studies
Hometown:
Pociuneliai, Lithuania
Favorite abroad experience:
Couchsurfing with my friends in several cities in Spain
Why you joined the GLGC?
I did not think that my study abroad experience would change my worldview completely since I was (and still am) an international student already, here in Gettysburg College. And yet I am surprised by how much I have discovered about myself: about what kind of people I want to be surrounded by, about what I want from life and what things should always come first. The ability to learn so incredibly much through non-academic means was – isn’t it a bit ironic? – one of the greatest skills that a college education gave me. And that is the reason why I want to promote studying abroad through GLGC, to encourage as many students as I can to healthily refresh their minds, reset their priorities, rediscover their values and also have that fun that all young people should have at least once in their lives.
What do you want to do after graduation:
As any other young person I am not sure whether my plans will turn into something real, but for the moment – this is the list: to work in some South American country for a short time, then volunteer in the Balkans through a EU Volunteer Service program and finally, get Master’s Degree in political science of either democratization-related comparative politics field or conflict management field in international relations.

Favorite Abroad Experience:
While in France I took a course which studied the art and architecture of Provence. We were able to go on several fieldtrips to visit Roman ruins, medieval churches and other treasures of Southern France. One Friday in October, the class visited the Pont du Gard, a massive Roman bridge and aqueduct that was built in the 1st century. The day was sunny and warm so a couple friends and I took the opportunity to swim underneath the Pont du Gard. We jumped from cliffs into the river. The feeling of swimming underneath a Roman bridge is one I will never forget.
Why I joined the GLGC:
One of the primary reasons I studied abroad was to give myself a more global education. I joined the GLGC because I want to continue learning and thinking globally. I want to make the most out of my Gettysburg experience and learn how to apply what goes on here to the world around us.
