All Gettysburg students who participate in one of our Affiliated off campus programs pay the same Comprehensive Fee as a semester at Gettysburg. It is therefore possible to plan for the overall cost of a four-year education at Gettysburg from the moment you make your decision to attend Gettysburg. In the same way that some academic majors at Gettysburg are more expensive to operate than others, some of our off campus programs are more expensive to operate than others. To ensure that every student has equal access to all academic opportunities, we charge the same price for all our programs. This way the College can ensure that students are able to make decisions about their on-campus major and their off campus program based solely on their interests and abilities, rather than on cost. Through this cost-sharing structure we are able to offer an extremely wide range of opportunities all over the globe. In some cases students take integrated course work at an overseas university; in other cases, students take classes taught by Gettysburg professors. In all cases, Gettysburg considers the academic work you do off campus as a regular part of your Gettysburg degree. As a Gettysburg student participating in an Affiliated Program, any financial aid you receive (with the exception of work study) will transfer to your off campus program. However, you still need to complete the necessary Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and other required documents as normal.

Yes. There are always additional costs when students study off campus. Please be sure to check with your program provider to get full financial details before you send a non-refundable deposit to the program. Although actual costs vary from program to program, and according to students' choices and budgets, all students must anticipate these additional costs:

 • Program Deposit: Amount: Usually between $250 - $1,500. When Paid: Upon acceptance to your program - usually within 15 days. How Paid: Paid by you directly to your Program Sponsor. A credit for this amount will appear on your Student Account after you depart for your program as this fee is covered by the Comprehensive Fee. (The program deposit is non-refundable)

 • Personal Expenses: Personal expenses can vary widely, but past students recommend having between $20-60 a week to pay for entertainment, snacks, toiletries, etc.

• Vacation/Travel Expenses: Most students travel during vacation breaks, so you will have to budget for housing, meals, transportation and other personal expenses while you're on the road. Travel can add significantly to your overall budget; past students have spent from $1,000-$5,000 for vacation activities depending on how far they go and how much time they take. All students must count on having some vacation expenses. In many programs, students will be asked to vacate their room during specified holidays and should plan alternative activities.

• Local Transportation: Unlike at Gettysburg College, you may have to commute as part of your off campus program. This is very typical for off campus programs, and at many other U.S. colleges! You should budget for bus or rail transportation and for occasional taxi fare. The amount will depend on your local travel requirements, but this could be as much as $300 per semester. If you are worried that commuting costs might be a financial burden for you, and you are flexible about where you will live, please specify this on your application form so that every attempt can be made to place you in housing with minimal commuting costs.

• Books, Course Packets, and Other Course Materials: As in the U.S., the cost of books can vary greatly. You should budget between $100-200 per semester for books, but students taking classes in the sciences will pay more (as you would at Gettysburg).

• Additional Flight Costs: The Airfare Allowance Credit is meant to be a gateway city to gateway city reimbursement (New York - London, San Francisco - Sydney, etc.). If your study abroad program is not in a major hub within your region of the world, the Airfare Allowance may not cover all of your costs. Please take this into consideration when choosing a program and contact OCS if you have any questions about what your flight costs might be.

• Facilities Usage: Unlike most institutions in the U.S., many foreign universities do not own their own athletic, health and entertainment facilities, so they must rent them or charge fees for their use. Depending on your personal interests you may find that you will pay virtually nothing for facilities usage, or $10 or more a week. If you plan to use such facilities, you must plan to pay a nominal fee for their use.

• Health Insurance: Gettysburg offers a health insurance plan for all students. Although having health insurance is mandatory, you can waive out of the Gettysburg Plan if you are covered under another health plan. Further information about this is sent to all students each year from the Financial Services Office. Some study abroad programs have required insurance plans which vary from $100-$400 per semester. If your program has a mandatory plan, you will be responsible for paying this fee.

• Medical Evacuation and Repatriation Insurance: In addition to health insurance, all students who are studying abroad must have Medical Evacuation and Repatriation Insurance. This insurance covers the additional costs associated with moving patients from one city to another, or from one country to another for medical treatment, if adequate treatment cannot be given locally. Repatriation insurance pays the cost of returning someone's remains to the U.S. if he or she dies overseas. While discussions of this kind are not easy, they are clearly important. Gettysburg College has a mandatory Medical Evacuation and Repatriation Insurance policy that all students studying abroad must purchase at a cost of $41.00 per month. If you feel that your current insurance policy or a policy associated with your off campus program is comparable, you may waive this fee by submitting proof of the coverage to the Off Campus Studies Office.

• Passport/Visa/Photographs: All international programs require a passport, some require a visa. The passport application and all visa applications require photographs. In addition to the fees associated with obtaining a passport, there may also be travel costs and other fees you will be responsible for in order to obtain your visa.

All students pay the Gettysburg College Comprehensive Fee. Gettysburg then pays for the following costs associated with your off campus program:

• Tuition Gettysburg College pays for all required academic costs for a full load of courses on your off campus program. All mandatory field trips or excursions are included, but optional field trips or excursions are your responsibility.

• Housing during the academic period Housing in a double or triple room or with a family is included. Students who choose to live in a single room for which there is a supplement will be billed the difference between the cost of a regular room and a single.

• Board during the academic period Gettysburg College pays for the equivalent of a "full meal plan" at your program site. This could be three meals a day with a host family, a meal plan in a residence hall, a credit to your Gettysburg student account so you can purchase and prepare food, or some combination of these things. Gettysburg College does not pay for meals you choose to eat out at restaurants so take full advantage of the meal arrangements included with your program.

• Support Services, Orientation Materials and Advising All students will have access to advising services while they are off campus via the Office of Off Campus Studies. Pre-Departure Handbooks and other orientation materials will be given to all students, and questions pertaining to Gettysburg College issues can be addressed by this office while students are off campus.

 • Airfare Allowance Credit: Gettysburg College recognizes that airfare is an added expense for off-campus study and grants an Airfare Allowance Credit to most students. The amount of this credit is based on the average cost of round-trip tickets to different world regions (gateway city to gateway city). Students should not be booking one-way tickets for departure and return, as this is generally more costly and less secure. The Airfare Allowance will be credited to your Student Account. However, all students must pay for their flight prior to receiving this credit since flight arrangements must be made several months in advance of departure as noted in the following Budget Worksheet. Note: Depending on where in the region you are flying the Airfare Allowance may not cover all of your flight costs (see: Will there be additional costs associated with off-campus study through an Affiliated program?).

All Gettysburg students who participate in one of our non-affiliated off campus programs pay the cost of the program directly to the institution sponsoring the program. Students pay no tuition, room or board to Gettysburg during the term off campus. Institutional aid does not transfer, but Federal aid and, in some cases, State aid does. Students electing to participate in an non-affiliated off campus program will be billed a Non-Affiliated Off-Campus Study Fee (each semester) that covers the administrative services provided by Gettysburg College for the student.

This fee defrays costs for providing access to a range of Gettysburg College resources and services to students while they are participating in Non-Affiliated programs.  Specifically, these resources and services include but are not limited to the following:

- Pre-departure advising and course pre-approval process; Pre-departure programming and materials; Processing of Federal Financial Aid; Pre-departure services through Counseling Services, and the availability of Counseling Services to consult with your study-abroad program if needed; Pre-departure services through Academic Advising, including supplying Individual Education Accommodation Plans (IEAP) for the off-campus program if needed; Access to Gettysburg email, Moodle, and all electronic resources and tools; Access to Gettysburg library's holdings, its staff, and its research capabilities;  Communication with the host program regarding logistical issues and student life matters; Access to Gettysburg College on-line course registration for the semester following the student's time off campus; Access to housing placement for the semester following the student's time off campus; Re-Entry programming and materials; Support in the credit-transfer process for academic coursework completed while participating in the Non-Affiliated program.
