Course Devlopment Grants - Awards 2005
The Provost and the Faculty Development Committee are pleased to announce that the following people have received Course Development Grants to prepare or revise courses in light of changes in the curriculum. The award comes with a $2000 stipend and up to $500 for expenses (e.g., visits to archives, books and related materials, consultations with colleagues). Please see the call for proposals for more information on these initiatives. It is expected that awardees will complete a draft syllabus and submit a course proposal to the department and APPC by the end of the summer and teach the course within the next two academic years.
Science, Technology and Society
Steve Gimbel - to redesign Philosophy 333 "Philosphy and Science" to meet the STS requirement and to make it easily "clusterable" with any course in the natural or social sciences.
Koren Holland Deckman and Michael Wedlock - to develop an alternative course for Chemistry 107 that will satisfy the STS requirement in addition to the Multiple Inquiries Requirement.
Asian Studies
Dina Lowy - to develop a new cours, possibly a First Year Seminar, that will examine the historical development and meaning of the categories known as "samari" and "geisha."
VoonChin Phua - to develop a 200-level Sociology course that focuses on the gobal connectivity of the Chinese population.
Eileen Stillwaggon - to incorporate a substantial Asian focus into several courses.
Diversity
Jennifer Bloomquist - to provide funds/stipends to revise AAS 103. Involves the collaboration of several faculty members in African American Studies.
Marta Robertson - to develop a new course on globalized music, "Music and Dance of Multicultural America."
