Green Roof
The Majestic Theater, owned and operated by Gettysburg College, installed a 2,000 square-foot intensive green roof in June, 2006.
By covering a portion of the roof with vegetation, the design
• reduces the building's energy use by keeping the roof cool
• replaces habitat space occupied by the building
• improves storm water management
• removes carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming, from the atmosphere through photosynthesis and the storage of carbon in plants' biomass (carbon sequestration)
• reduces the building's albedo — its ability to absorb and reradiate heat from the sun — and thereby helps lower air temperatures and reduce smog
