Compost Program

Painted Turtle Farm Home | Environmental Education | Green Goodies | Compost Program

The Painted Turtle Farm, located on the western end of campus provides produce and herbs to the Dining Hall and to local food banks. June, 2011

The Painted Turtle Farm partners with the Dining Center, Facilities Services, and the recycling interns to coordinate the Compost Program. Vegetable and fruit scraps, eggshells, soil, leaves, yard waste, and garden weeds are piled into compost bins to enrich the farm's soil. The program reduces the College's contribution to the waste stream, and it closes the sustainable loop. The program won state and national honors in RecycleMania's 2008 Food Service Organics competition, placing fifth in Pennsylvania and 37th nationally.

Farmhouse utilizes a three-step composting system, with fresh food waste located in the pit on the far right, all the way to rich compost on the left. June, 2011

Students with compostable organic waste are always welcome at Farmhouse!

The Compost Program is always in need of volunteers!
