Black Cinema - Not Film Noir

Gettysburg College has an impressive collection of films, including African and African American, at Musselman Library. The collection includes documentary and feature length films by African and African American directors, and about African peoples globally.

Black Drama, from the Alexander Street Press, contains the full text of plays written by more than 100 playwrights from English-speaking Africa, the Caribbean, other African Diaspora countries, as well as North America, from the mid-1800s to the present, and is also available via the library's online databases page under African American Studies.

Shuttles in the rocking loom of history,
the dark ships move, the dark ships move,
their bright ironical names
like jests of kindness on a murderer's mouth;
plough through thrashing glister toward
fata morgana's lucent melting shore,
weave toward New World littorals that are
mirage and myth and actual shore. - Robert Hayden, "Middle Passage"

"After I die, I want a big signboard placed in front of my house
with the words 'Theatre was born here.' " - Gibson Kente

Any form of art is a form of power, it has impact,
it can affect change--it can not only move us, it makes us move.
