The Pittsburgh MSTP offers a 10-week summer research and professional development program for disadvantaged and underrepresented minority students interested in careers as physician scientists. The program is designed for students in their freshman, sophomore or junior years of college. Application Deadline: February 1. This is a very competitive program, so apply early.
Caltech's MURF program (http://www.murf.caltech.edu/) provides support for talented undergraduates to spend a summer working in a research laboratory on the Caltech campus. The MURF program aims to increase the representation of underrepresented students in science and engineering graduate programs and to make Caltech's programs more visible to students not traditionally exposed to Caltech. The Partnership for Minority Advancement in the Biomolecular Sciences offers a National Internship Clearinghouse. The Association of American Medical Colleges offers its Minority Medical Education Program (MMEP), giving "summer educational experiences to help promising, highly motivated students gain admission to medical schools." MMEP program sites admit applicants on a rolling admissions basis, but the sooner you apply, the better! Many hospitals, community based organizations, and other healthcare organizations in the Detroit-Flint-Ann Arbor area have agreed to provide paid ($3,000) summer internships in health administration and policy to qualified undergraduate students. These internships are part of the University of Michigan's Summer Enrichment Program in Health Administration. The ultimate goal of this Program is to increase participation of students committed to eliminating health disparities in this important and exciting field. Students accepted into this program who reside outside of the state of Michigan will receive housing, a food allowance and travel expenses to and from Ann Arbor. Please note that the application deadline is March 5, 2005. AT&T offers summer internships. Their present web page needs to be updated, but check it out for future developments! Cornell University's Weill Graduate School of Medical Sciences offers an internship program to under-represented minority students who are interested in getting a Ph.D. degree and who have excelled in their freshmen, sophomore, or junior years in college. Sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURE) at Emory University "allows undergraduate students to conduct supervised research with a faculty mentor." The Great Lakes Water Institute offers summer internships (REU) to allow "talented, aspiring young scientists in the prime of their undergraduate education continuum...to get a grip on the reality of scientific careers." Harvard Medical School announces that "summer research opportunities will be available in a variety of biological and biomedical sciences including (but not limited to): cellular and developmental biology, cell cycle regulation, cardiac and vascular functions and pathology,studies of blood cells, endocrinology, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, receptor structure and functions, transmembrane signaling mechanisms, study of clotting mechanisms, and virology." Howard University and the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation sponsor the Barbara Jordan Health Policy Scholars Program, which provides 13 talented minority college students employment in a congressional office with health policy responsibilities. These student gain exposure to health policy issues and firsthand understanding of how the federal government works, with seminars, lectures, and field trips enhancing these work experiences. The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center offers a summer research program for undergraduate students between their junior and senior years of studies.
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution offers 10-12 week fellowships for minority undergraduate students during the summer. The New York University School of Medicine sponsors a Minority Undergraduate Summer Research Program designed to increase the short supply of under-represented minority physicians and scientists within the health professions. The Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission announces its Mickey Leland Environmental Internship Program. Since 1990, Tufts University's Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences, located in the heart of downtown Boston, MA, offers a summer research program in biomedical science for minority undergraduate students. Research opportunities for eligible applicants are available each summer in the fields of biochemistry, biotechnology, cell biology, developmental biology, genetics, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, neuroscience, pathogenesis, physiology, public health, and virology. The University of Massachusetts Medical School offers College Summer Enrichment Program (SEP), a tuition-free four-week residential program for undergraduate sophomores and juniors interested in entering the health professions. The goals of the program are to help participants improve their qualifications and competitive standing for admission to professional, graduate and/or medical school. The program includes enrichment activities to enhance participants' academic and communication skills. The school also offers an NIH research fellowship for minority students.The Department of Biological Sciences of the University of South Carolina invites students to participate in undergraduate research in integrative evolutionary biology for the Summer of 2004. The Research Education Support (RES) Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks to assist the University in supporting increased numbers of students from underrepresented minority groups to gain meaningful research experiences and to enroll in Ph.D. programs. Vanderbilt University offers its minority summer research program in a variety of areas. |
