Forty years ago, Coaches Boone and Yoast held a preseason camp at Gettysburg College, in an aim to foster kinship, teamwork and allegiance in a team divided by racial and community tensions. The story of their struggles as well as achievement has been told, retold and inspired many.
Africana Studies Program, in collaboration with The President's Office, Intercultural Resource Center and Alumni Relations invited Coaches Herman Boone and Bill Yoast who, on October 30, 2011 returned to Gettysburg College, their second trip since that memorable preseason camp. Once again, the Coaches shared their story with many in the college community. They were joined by Mr. Gareth "Lefty" Biser, trainer of the Gettysburg Football team in 1971 and key facilitator to the T.C. Williams' event in Gettysburg. Many memories rekindled the Titans journey both as portrayed in the acclaimed movie staring Denzel Washington, Remember the Titans, as well as missing from the film script.
