White House Internships

The White House Internship Program provides a unique opportunity to gain valuable professional experience and build leadership skills.  In addition to normal office duties, interns attend a weekly lecture series hosted by senior White House staff, and volunteer at White House social events and community service projects. This hands-on program is designed to mentor and cultivate today's young leaders, strengthen their understanding of the Executive Office and prepare them for future public service opportunities.

Summer Transportation Internship Program

The Summer Transportation Internship Program for Diverse Groups (STIPDG) is an initiative of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) that provides opportunities for college students to gain work experience in various fields of transportation; it provides qualified members of diverse groups with summer opportunities in transportation where these groups have been under-represented.  Funded by the FHWA's Office of Civil Rights' On-the-Job Training Supportive Services Program, the objective of the STIPDG is to provide college/university students with hands-on experience and on-the-job training while working on current transportation-related topics and issues.  

Summer Opportunities for Minority Students

This list of Summer Opportunities For Minority Undergraduate Students was compiled by Caroline Kouassiaman, an economic development project coordinator in Ghana who received her joint MA of Public Administration/International Relations from Syracuse University. It includes resources for summer programs at the University of Illinois, American Negro College Fund, The AFL-CIO Union, Population Resource Center, the Century Fund, and more.

Steelworkers' Summer 

The Steelworkers' Summer is an educational and training internship in which participants develop skills useful for union organizing by experiencing firsthand the kinds of struggles workers face while trying to win a voice at work. The program is committed to uniting students, workers, and community activists to bring about social justice through work place and community organizing.  

CIC Summer Research Opportunities Program

The Committee on Institutional Cooperation (an academic consortium of the "Big Ten" universities and the University of Chicago) offers a Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) that seeks to interest talented undergraduate minority students in academic careers, and to enhance their preparation for graduate study through intensive research experiences with faculty mentors. Participating institutions include Pennsylvania State University.

University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill serves as a hub for several internship and research opportunities. UNC also hosts the National Internship Clearinghouse resource list for the Partnership for Minority Advancement in the Biomolecular Sciences.

Smithsonian Programs

As part of its mandate for "the increase and diffusion of knowledge," Smithsonian Institute's Office of Fellowships and Grants offers a number of opportunities designed to include the diverse ideas, skills, and cultures of the nation. The Smithsonian pursues policies of equal opportunity and cultural diversity.

University of California, Riverside

UC-Riverside offers a Graduate Division Mentoring Summer Research Internship Program (MSRIP) for rising juniors and seniors interested in pursuing PhDs in a variety of fields.
