Asian Studies

The Asian Studies Department is the home to the Japanese Studies major, the Japanese Studies minor, and the East Asian Studies minor.  Courses on countries other than Japan and China are also available through this department and others on campus.

The Japanese Studies Major is interdisciplinary and students explore the culture, language, literature, history, religion, art and politics of Japan. Language courses develop proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Study abroad in Japan adds a vital component to the Japanese studies major. A College-affiliated program with Kansai Gaidai University, located between Osaka and Kyoto, offers language instruction and a full range of Japanese courses, plus a home stay with a Japanese family, trips to cultural and historical sites, insight into traditional art forms, and other opportunities.
