Chemistry
The Chemistry Department stresses independent thinking and rewards initiative through courses and other experiences that expose you to a broad range of knowledge in contemporary chemistry. Throughout the curriculum, you learn chemistry by doing chemistry-in laboratories and through research and capstone projects in the major. Twice-monthly chemistry seminars where students give presentations are a distinguishing feature of the department, as are faculty-student research collaborations that give you opportunities to publish and present research.
Resources and facilities in Gettysburg's new 86,000 square-foot Science Center are first-rate, including atomic absorption, infrared, fluorescence, and UV/visible spectrometers; NMR spectrometers; electron microscopes; an Nd:YAG laser; and other instrumentation commonly used by professionals practicing modern science.
A Gettysburg chemistry degree provides a strong foundation for success in a range of careers and in graduate school. About three quarters of chemistry majors go on at some point in their lives to graduate or professional school in chemistry, medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, and other fields.
